Last 10 Nights of Ramadan Game plan

Salaamz dear readers,

I am super excited about today’s post because it will change the rest of your life Insha’Allah! The last 10 nights of Ramadan are coming upon us in just a few days. Subhan’Allah this month just flew by didn’t it?

Hopefully you read my post on setting goals and have been stepping up your worship during the best month of the year.

Now the feature presentation is coming: Laylatul Qadr!

Laylatul Qadr: The Night of Power. The Night of Decree. The Night that is equal to 1000 months. The Night of Destiny.

Last 10 nights of Ramadan game plan

Last 10 nights of Ramadan game plan

During the last 10 nights of the month of Ramadan, on an odd night, is a night that is better than a thousand months. That means, that one night is equivalent to approximately 83.3 years! Whatever good deeds you do during that night, it will be written as if you did those deeds for 83 years! If you were blessed with witnessing and experiencing 10 Ramadans – that means you could easily rack up good deeds equal to 833 years!

Though many people swear that the 27th night is Laylatul Qadr- we don’t know for sure and therefore should worship on all last ten nights or at least the odd nights so as not to risk missing this night.

Aside from having our good deeds multiplied and equal to worshipping for 1000 nights, this night is especially significant because Allah SWT conveys our decree/Qadr for the year to the angels.

Though our fate was already written, it is only being conveyed to the angels on this particular night- this means that our fate/qadr can still be changed!

Nothing can change qadr except dua! For example: it could have been decreed that you were supposed to die next year; however if you make dua and ask Allah for a long life, even your time of death can be changed! It only makes sense that on the night when our fate for the entire year is being recorded by the angels that we make sincere dua for the best results Insha’Allah.

(reference; Dr. Yasir Qadhi khutba)

I can’t use enough exclamation really is that exciting!!!

It’s not about quantity, it’s about quality.

One surprising thing I have learned in the past few years is that there are many small duas or acts of worship that are greater in good deeds than hours of other worship. There is such a thing as worship hacks in Islam!

Last 10 Nights of Ramadan hacks:

1.Pray Isha salah and fajr salah in congregation at the masjid- you will be rewarded  as if you prayed the entire night!
2. Create Dream Team Dua group- so that for every single hour in the last 10 nights your duas are being made. (I will get into that later)
3. Divide up your yearly zakah by 10- give 1/10th to charity every night. Whatever you end up donating on Laylatul Qadr will be as if you donated that much for 83 years continuously!!
4. Though there are hundreds of Quranic and Sunnah duas we could read, there is one particular dua that the Prophet PBUH specifically mentioned for Laylatul Qadr:

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنَّكَ عَفُوٌّ ، تُحِبُّ الْعَفْوَ فَاعْفُ عَنِّي
Aisha (RA) reported: I asked: “O Messenger of Allah! If I realize Lailat-ul-Qadr (Night of Decree), what should I supplicate in it?” He replied, “You should supplicate: Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun, tuhibbul-‘afwa, fa’fu ‘anni (O Allah, You are the One who Pardons greatly, and You love to pardon; so pardon me).” [At-Tirmidhi].
5.If you’re strapped for time or running out of ideas of what to make dua for, read the most comprehensive dua:

رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“Rabbanaa ‘aatinaa fid-dunyaa hasanatan wa fil-‘aakhirati hasanatan
wa qinaa ‘athaaban-naar.” (2:201)
“Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!”

As excited as I am about this topic of Laylatul Qadr, there’s way too much to cover in just one post. Instead I am going to focus on Ramadan hack #2 (from above). I wanted to share in detail just one way to maximize your Ibadah during the last 10 nights of Ramadan without staying up all night. In all honesty, though staying up all night is the Sunnah I’m not sure if I could do that in this point in my life May Allah swt give me the ability to do it in the near future. Ameen.
BUUUTTTT it doesn’t mean that I still can’t maximize my dua potential!

What if I told you there was a way to ensure that your duas are being made every single hour of the blessed last 10  nights?? It’s possible my dears ! Just follow these steps:

1. Create a Dua Dream Team (see below)*

2. Assign a friend to each hour in between Isha and Suhoor time. Here in my part of the world Isha is about 10:30pm and we usually start eating Suhoor around 3:30 am. That’s 5 hours of dua time.

Time 10:30-11:30 11:30-12:30 12:30-1:30 1:30-2:30 2:30-3:30
Night 1 Sahar Madihah Sadia Sarah Naila
Night 2 Naila Sahar Madihah Sadia Sarah

3.E-mail each other your dua list.

4.Follow Dua night step by step Playbook (see below)

Dua Dream Team Roster*

Dream team members should be:

  1. Someone you trust: sharing your duas with someone is very personal. You’re allowing them to peer into your innermost desires and needs. If you’re not comfortable sharing every single dua of yours, give them a brief list and ask them to make dua for ‘everything from X’s list to come true’.
  2. Pregnant women, sick people and the oppressed are those whose duas are readily answered..make sure you round up some of those if you can!
  3. Someone as deeply invested in having their duas answered as you. You want someone who will readily wake up and make your duas sincerely without being forced to.

Last 10 nights of Ramadan game plan

Dua night step by step Play book.

1.Each person should have someone else make sure they are awake and making dua. Example: time slot 5 should call time slot 1 at 10:30 to make sure they’re up and making dua. Like a relay race- the first member can’t move on or fall asleep until they know the second member is awake.
2. Make wudhu
3. Say bismillah
(The following steps of making dua are not the ONLY way to make dua- I have compiled the duas that were mentioned in lectures I’ve heard in the past as being one of the ‘best’ or ‘most efficient’ ways to get your duas answered. I’ve tried to include references where I found them)

4. Glorify Allah
“سُبْحَانَ اللهِ وَبِحَمْدِهِ: عَدَدَ خَلقِهِ،

وَرِضَا نَفْسِهِ، وَزِنَةَ عَرْشِهِ وَمِدَادَ كَلِمَاتِهِ”.
Subhan-Allahi wa bihamdihi, `adada khalqihi, wa rida nafsihi, wa zinatah `arshihi, wa midada kalimatihi X 3

[Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)].”

[Sahih Muslim – Book 035 – Hadith 6575]
Ibn `Abbas reported from Juwayriyah (RA) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) came out early when he offered the Subh [Morning] Salah while she was in her praying place. Then he returned after the forenoon while she was sitting. Thereupon, he said: “Are you still in the same position as I left you. I replied in the affirmative. Thereupon, the Prophet said: I recited four words three times after I had left you. If these are to be weighed against all you have recited since morning, these will be heavier. These are: Subhan-Allahi Wa Bihamdihi, `Adada Khalqihi, Wa Rida Nafsihi, Wa Zinatah `Arshihi, Wa Midada Kalimatihi [Allah is free from imperfection and I begin with His praise, as many times as the number of His creatures, in accordance with His Good Pleasure, equal to the weight of His Throne and equal to the ink that may be used in recording the words (for His Praise)].”

5. Send peace and salutations on the Prophet (PBUH).

Allahumma Salli Ala Muhammadiw wa Ala aali Muhammadin Kamaa Sallaita ala Ibrahima wa Ala aali Ibrahima Innaka Hamidum Majid.

Allahumma Baarik Ala Muhammadiw wa Ala aali Muhammadin Kamaa Baarakta Ala  Ibrahima wa Ala aali Ibrahima Innaka Hamidum Majid.

“O Allah, let Your Blessings come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious. Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious”.

6. Sayyidna Istighfar

(O Allah! You are my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but You. You created me and I am Your slave, and I am faithful to my covenant and my promise as much as I can. I seek refuge with You from all the evil I have done. I acknowledge before You all the blessings You have bestowed upon me, and I confess to You all my sins. So I entreat You to forgive my sins, for nobody can forgive sins except You.)

Shaddad ibn Aws (radiAllahu anhu) relates that the Prophet (salAllahu alayhi wasalam) said that he (Sayyid al-Istighfar) most superior way of asking for forgiveness from Allah is to say (the above du’a). That “If somebody recites it during the day with firm faith in it, and dies on the same day before the evening, he will be from the people of Paradise; and if somebody recites it at night with firm faith in it, and dies before the morning, he will be from the people of Paradise.”
[sahih al-Bukhari; 8,75,318, at-Tirmidhi; 3393, an-Nasa’i; 5522, Ahmad; 16662]

7. Dua of Yunus- say this to get Allah’s attention

la ilaha illa anta subhanaka innee kuntu mina alththalimeena
“La ilaha illa Anta [none has the right to be worshipped but You (O Allah)], Glorified (and Exalted) are You [above all that (evil) they associate with You]. Truly, I have been of the wrong-doers.”
Al-Qur’an, 021.087 (Al-Anbiya [The Prophets])
Sa’d ibn Waqas reported that our Prophet Muhammad (sall-Allahu alaihi wasallam) said,
“The supplication made by the Companion of the Fish (Prophet Yunus) in the belly of the fish was, ‘La ilaha illa anta, subhanaka, inni kuntu minaz-zalimeen (there is no god but You, You are far exalted and above all weaknesses, and I was indeed the wrongdoer). If any Muslim supplicates in these words, his supplication will be accepted.”

8. Now start asking for your duahs first, then the rest of the lists. Ask Allah with humility, sincerity and complete belief that these duas will come true! It is recommended to beg Allah like a child; whine, cry, pester your Creator. Decide that you will cry and keep begging Him until He gives in. Another interesting point to remember is that the only reason you’re actually making dua is because Allah willed for you to- He willed that you in that very moment will be making those duas- don’t you think He will answer them? He made you write those items on your dua list, He inspired you to think of asking Him, He gave you the opportunity to witness this Ramadan and the ability to make dua. He’s setting you up for success! How does it feel to make duas Allah inspired you to make? You should feel so excited about making these duas!
May Allah (SWT) accept all of your ibadah, May He (SWT) accept every single one of your duas, May He (SWT) make you successful in the life and in the Hereafter. Ameen.
Please add me and my family to your dua list! If you would like me to add you to my dua list please e-mail me

In case you just scrolled to the bottom of this rather lengthy post without reading most of it- I would suggest that you read point #4 from Ramadan hacks- the bare minimum should be you repeating this dua over and over again Insha’Allah.

I have created a summarized version of the playbook for you to print out and Insha’Allah maximize your ibadah.

Chai after iftar,

The last ten nights of Ramadan are very special. These are the nights that the Prophet Muhammad would spend in constant worship. Among these nights is Laylat al-Qadr (the Night of Power) – a night more blessed than a thousand months.

The Prophet used to single these nights out for worship and the performance of good deeds. He would exert himself in worship during these ten nights more than any other nights of the year.

Aisha tells us: “During the last ten nights of Ramadan, the Prophet would tighten his waist belt and spend the night in worship. He would also wake up his family.” (Al Bukhari)

Aisha also says: “I had never known Allah’s Messenger to read the entire Quran in a single night, or to spend the whole night in prayer up until the morning, or to spend a whole month in fasting – except in Ramadan.” (An Nasai’ & Ibn MajahAbu Hurayrah relates that the Prophet said:

“Whoever spends Laylat al-Qadr in prayer, believing in Allah and seeking His reward, will be forgiven all of his past sins.” (Al Bukhari& Muslim)bn Umar relates that Prophet Muhammad said:

“Look for it in the last ten nights. If one of you falls weak or unable to do so, then he should at least try on the seven remaining nights.” (Muslim)

A Muslim should seek out this special night by spending the last ten nights of Ramadan engaged in various acts of worship.
